In the year 1050 Hegra (1670 Gregorian Calendar) a specific and unique architecture in building houses, mosques, wekkalas (trading buildings), and tekkias (hotels) in the trading route between North Africa and Asia passing by Upper Egypt. These buildings are characterised by huge walls (70-90cm width) and by decorations wirh mosaic bricks of red, black, and white and entangling in the composition of strong wood from local wood.
Most of these houses have a wooded facade of 2-3 meter length, 0.4 meter heigth and 0.4 meter width where the owner name, the builder name and the year of finishing are detecated in addition to an Arabic inscription.
These buildings are collapsing and are demolished by their owners, who want to build new houses. We preserved some facades and documented most of theses buildings.
